Venice

Venice was built on 118 small islands off the coast of Italy. The islands are connected by different waterways and canals. Venice used these waterways and canals instead of roads, and instead of using cars, they use flat-bottom boats called gondolas. Gondolas are driven by gondoliers. Gondolas are used for transportation in Venice. Venice is even well known for its beautiful art and architecture. The most famous style of art in Venice is Venetian Gothic Architecture. A very important center for art is known as the Venetian School. Music is also a very important part of Venice. Opera was also very important in Venice. Antonio Vivaldi was a great composer who came from Venice. Marco Polo also lived in Venice. Also, out of all the first cities with a printing press and established business, Venice was one of them. A carnival in Venice has been held since the 12th century. Throughout the carnival, everyone wore a mask. They even had a contest to see who had the most beautiful mask.

The Hundred Year's War

The Hundred Year's War is a series of peace and battles that lasted one hundred years. It started when Edward III of England's uncle (the king of France) died. He was the closest heir to the throne, but because of a rule in an old, ancient law code, the descendant from woman can't claim the throne, so Edward III can't claim the throne since his mom is his uncle's sister, so instead, Philip VI of France became king instead because he was the closest heir from the male line, so he became king.

The Hundred Year's Was is separated into three different parts: The Edwardian Era, which lasted from 1337-1360, The Caroline War, which lasted from 1364-1389, and The Lancastrian Era, which lasted from 1415-1453. The Hundred Year's War was very influential.

The first battle recorded in the hundred years war was known as "The Battle of Sluys" in which it was a ship battle and the English severely won. After this victory for the English, Edward went on and captured Caen in just one day. After that victory, Philip met him at the "Battle of Crecy"; however, England won the battle too. They even captured the city of Calais. Having Calais enabled England to keep soldiers in France. After a plague called the Black Death, both England and France got a new king. France got John II for a new king. England god Edward, the Black Prince, for a new king. Edward, the Black Prince, led an invasion at Gascony and won. This battle was known as "The Battle of Poitiers. During this war, John II of France was captured by the Englis, so his son, Dauphin, ruled in his father's place.

The first peace treaty of the war lasted from 1360 all the way to 1369. This treaty was known as The Treaty of Bretigny. Charles V succeeded John II of France when he died in 1364.

The first peace treaty ended with tax disagreements in Aquitaine against France. After Edward III of England and his son both died, Richard II became king of England. Henry of England continued the war after a second peace treaty that lasted from 1389-1415.

The Battle fo Agincourt was a major victory for the English. Agincourt was a small, muddy field, which gave the English the upper hand. 400 Englishmen died compared to about 6,000 Frenchmen. The Treaty of Troyes brought about peace again and agreed that the heirs of Henry would be given the French throne.

Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who lived in France. When she was twelve, she began to receive visions of saints, and it took her a while until she realized the saints were telling her to lead an army and drive the English out of France and to help the king take back his country. Joan tried three times to have a conversation with the king to help him retake his throne, until one day the king let her in and she convinced him to take back France, but before she led an army, she needed to be tested by some priests to see if she held the correct religion and orthodoxy, and she did. To reform the French army, she made them go to church, treat civilians like they want to be treated, and stop swearing. Joan won many battles and drove the English out of France and even encouraged Charles of France to be coronated and he did.

During a battle, she got captured and was executed by being burned at the state as a heretic. She is still well-remembered today.

Beans and Seeds

Beans and seeds are very healthy for your body. Some beans and seeds come in a rich variety and in minerals and vitamins. Our bodys need iron, potassium, vitamin C, K, A, and a lot more minerals and vitamins to survive.

Fruits, vegetables, and lots of other plants have enzymes that replace the enzymes that we lose every day, although plants lose enzymes when they're cut from their source.

Inorganic fruits have been sprayed by chemicals made by people to keep bugs off it and is quite unhealthy. Organic fruits are very healthy and are full of enzymes.

Seeds and beans are very healthy for your body. Here are a few: Alfalfa beans have just about every vitamin and mineral that can keep you alive; and yet, they are just over one millimeter long! Adzuki beans are rich in produce. Mung beans contain iron, vitamin C, and potassium, which is very healthy for your body. Sesame seeds are often known to be put on various food choices, and again, another very healthy seed.

I did a project and if you're going to do it, you'll need a glass jar, a cheesecloth, a rubber band, and of course, seeds or beans. If you are using very small seeds or beans, cover the bottom of the jar, and if you are using very big beans or seeds. Then fill the jar half full with water. let it sit for a while and then drain it. Keep up this process until the beans or seeds start to sprout.

Honey is also good for you, especially wild honey. Bees make the honey that we have now from nectar. Wild Honey has been known to have antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal. It has also been known to heal a lot of people and is a great medicine.

Water

You need to drink a lot of water per day to stay healthy, but how much water should you drink per day? Well, first you need to determine your weight and then divide that number by two and then that number is how many fluid ounces you need to drink each day. Your body is also very close to being made of 70% water. There are also many ways to lose water including sweating, talking, breathing, etc. Bottled water is very unhealthy compared to tap water, which is way healthier than bottled water. We could dring too much water and could become fatal. Water can also heal heartburn, arthritis, back pain, and a lot more. My mom likes lemon water because it has vitamin C and keeps your body from getting sick and helps your liver get all the poison out of your body. I'm thankful for water.

Sugar

Sugar is very unhealthy for the body and the brain. Sugar is so unhealthy, in fact, that it is probably the largest cause of sickness, pain, and disease on earth. Sugar comes in various types of food and candy. There are also different types of sugar, including Glutose, Maltose, Dextrose, and a whole lot more. Sugar is hard to resist because there are chemicals in your brain that when you taste sugar, you become addicted to it. Sugar also feeds the cancerous cells. Sugar is also hard to resist because it is in many things you buy fro the store. Some of the things we buy from the store that have sugar in them are BBQ sauce and jelly beans. They both have corn syrup and other bad sugars that are very bad for your body. My mom and dad don't let me eat a lot of sugar, although a little sugar every now and then won't hurt you.

Signaling Devices

If you are lost in the woods, forest, rainforest, etc. you will need a signaling device. There are many signaling devices, including automatic signal devices, manual signal devices, and short duration signal devices.

Automatic signal devices are devices that send a signal which another one picks up and tells it where the person is, that he needs help, and stuff like that. There are Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon, or for short, EPIRBs.

Manual signal devices are things like signal mirrors, whistles, flashlights, signal fires, flags, and laser flares. Signal mirrors are my favorite and are great during the daytime. Their reflection from the sun can be seen 50 miles away! That is farther than a whistle could be heard! During the nighttime, laser flares are great.

Short Duration signal devices are something like flares and smoke signals. They don't last long but they are also great signal devices. They are not good during windy or rainy days, so I prefer getting a signal mirror or a laser flare.

Sharp Stuff for Trekking and Camping

Trekking is hiking for a long time. Even for a few days! An ax would not be a good idea if you were trekking, because it is heavy and bulky. A survival knife would be a great idea if you were hunting in case you needed to skin an animal or something. A multi-fool would be perfect for trekking in case you needed lots of different tasks to be done, for example, a knife to split kindle for a fire, bottle opener to obviously open bottles, a ruler in case someone needs to measure something. I prefer the micro multi-tool from Leatherman.com because it isn't that heavy.

Camping is just as much fun as trekking, but I prefer camping. This time, bringing an ax is a great idea! it can split wood very quickly, especially the extreme performance axes from Fiskars.com These axes come in different sizes, but they have a superior blade design. It has more power at impact and it is virtually unbreakable, so I highly recommend buying one of these. Like in the earlier paragraph, a survival knife and a multi-tool are still a good idea to bring as I told you earlier.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

“Journey to the Center of the Earth”, was written by Jules Verne. The book is science fiction and is one of my favorite books. The story begins with two people in Hamburg, Germany, Professor Hardwigg and his nephew, Henry. When Henry helps his uncle crack a secret code, they decide to follow the clues from the decoded message and try to reach the center of the Earth! They go to the Heil railroad which will take them to the harbor, so they can get on a boat and sail to Iceland. There they would attempt to go down an inactive volcano called Mt. Sneffles and travel to the core of the Earth.

It was at least a seven day voyage to get to Iceland. It was windy and overcast, but they made it to Iceland safely. They start their journey to Mt. Sneffles the day after their boat lands. On the journey to the volcano, they meet Hans, who ends up guiding them on the journey.

It was cold outside when they reached Mt. Sneffles. Their descent into the volcano was extremely long. When they reached the bottom they enter the caverns under Mt. Sneffles. By then, they were ten thousand feet below sea level. Later they enter a coal mine in the caverns.

After they got out of the coal mine they were right under the ocean floor. Soon they ran out of water, but thankfully they found some more not long after. Now they are twenty-one miles below the surface of the earth!

The next day, Henry gets lost! He falls down a deep hole and passes out. When he woke up Hans and the Professor were looking for him, and finally found him. When they continued their journey they discovered an underground ocean which Professor Hardwigg named “The Central Sea.” They also found a forest of mushrooms with mushrooms that were forty feet tall!

Hans begins to build a raft so they are able to cross the sea. When it is finished they begin their underground voyage on The Central Sea. By now the temperature is much warmer. They catch fish that are extinct on Earth, but not in the Central Sea. They even watch a sea monster fight!

When they land the raft on an island they explore a forest and find a cave. The cave was full of bones. They quickly leave the cave and find a herd of enormous elephants. While they were going back to the raft, they find a rusted dagger, not belonging to any of the three men. They realized that this was the same path that the first explorer, Arne Saknussemm, had taken on his journey to the center of the Earth. They find a boulder blocking a cave by the dagger and they wanted to get inside. So, they tried to make the boulder explode to get inside the cave. Well, they do blow up the boulder, but they were taking cover on their raft and the explosion made them drift out into the sea.

They drifted into a shaft and began rapidly rising. The water was boiling, the walls were burning, and worst of all, they ran out of food. They were in the shaft for at least one day. The water is getting hotter every second.

It turns out that the shaft they were in, was actually part of an active volcano! They were shot out of the top of the volcano located on the island of Stromboli off the coast of Italy. From there they catch a ride back to Hamburg, Germany. I loved reading “Journey to the Center of the Earth”! I have only seen the movie, but the book was more interesting. I loved all the adventure and the excitement that the characters had on their journey. It would be amazing if any of this were to ever happen!

John Wycliffe

Wycliffe was born in a village near Yorkshire England in 1320. When he was old enough, he was sent to Oxford University. While he was there, he earned his bachelor's degree in theology. When he was there, he went to live in Lutterworth for the rest of his life. He was a great and famous preacher and teacher. He even preached and argued against many religious practices of his day. The Pope did not kindly accept Wycliffe's teachings, but because Wycliffe was so popular in England, the Pope issued five bulls (church edicts) against Wycliffe. Wycliffe thought that it would be important that everyone should read the Bible in their very own language since the Bibles in his day were written in Latin and all the church services were done in Latin. Wycliffe died before he could finish his translation of the Bible into English, so his friend, John Purvey, finished it for him. Without him, we would of never had the English Bible today. 130 years after his death, his works and bones were to be burned and the ashes scattered into a river, but his followers continued to spread the works of Wycliffe and was remembered for hundreds of years.

William Tell

William Tell helped gain Swiss independence from the Hapsburgs, the Holy Roman Empire at that time. He may have not been a real person. He may have been a real person, but if he was real, some of the story may not have been real.

When the Holy Roman Empire set up Gessler to govern the people in the town in which William Tell lived, he set up his hat in the center of town so whenever somebody passed by the hat, they had to bow to it to show respect, but William Tell refused to bow to the had and even Gessler himself. That made Gessler very angry. Gessler arrested William Tell and for his punishment, he had to shoot an apple off his own son's head. Well, this may seem impossible, but he performed the miracle shot. William Tell had two arrows in his pocket because if any harm came to his son, he would shot Gessler with it. This made Gessler even more angry so he sent him on a ship to Gessler's castle, but there was a storm, so they let William Tell free and he managed to guide the ship to safety. After he beached the ship, he ran for his life. He killed Gessler with his second arrow. He began the fight for Swiss independence after he killed Gessler. The Swiss Confederation gained its independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499.

Kubla Khan

Kubla Khan was a very important ruler. He also had a grandfather named Gengis Khan. Kubla Khan was the fifth great Khan of the Mongol Empire. He did not become king till he was in his late thirties. Kubla Khan made many conquests alongside his brother who was the Great Khan for that time being. He became king several years later.

Compared to Gengis Khan, Kubla Khan was way more thoughtful, kinder, and wiser. He even ruled his people very fairly. He did not destroy civilizations he conquered, but instead, he civilized towards the people he ruled. He created the Yuan Dynasty in 1271. Many things were made or rebuilt. Kubla Khan lived longer than his wife and his son. His death resulted in many different diseases and became very overweight in his old age. He died in February 1294 A.D. His grave is in the Mongol burial site. Kubla Khan was the ruler of China, which expanded the Mongol empire greatly. He even saw Marco Polo, his dad, and his uncle during his reign.

The Lion of the North

The Lion of the North

by G. A. Henty

In the book, The Lion of the North, that I just finished reading, it tells the story of Malcolm Graeme, and how he gained a high position in the king’s court. The book is set in Scotland in the year 1630. It started out as Malcolm waiting in the forest for a group of horsemen, to guide them through the forest. Malcolm was 16 years old and lived with his uncle, Nigel, because his parents have died.

Captain Hume was with the horsemen and met Malcolm in the forest. Malcolm took Captain Hume and the horsemen to his uncle’s house for the night. The next morning, Captain Hume invited Nigel and Malcolm to collect a band of men from the city of Nithsdale, to help build an army. Nigel and Malcolm agreed with this plan and proceeded to find men who were willing to fight for their country.

A few days later, Malcolm, Nigel, and the men who volunteered to be in the army were shipwrecked. They were resourceful and built a raft out of the wreckage. They eventually got to the King’s castle, the place they had been trying to get to before they were shipwrecked.

At the King Gustavus’ castle, there was a feast going on, and Malcolm met Sir John Hepburn. Sir John Hepburn had been welcomed into the counsel of King Gustavus because he had proven his worth by fighting at a young age. In the book, we are told that Sir John Hepburn led his army at the battle of Schiefelburne. Sir John and his army of men were victorious!

Later on in the book, a village is attacked by freebooters or in other words, pirates or bandits. Malcolm was told the news and rode with an army to the village. Malcolm and his army drove the attackers out of Wolfsburg. Because of his wondrous and brave deed, Malcolm is introduced to King Gustavus! The King was impressed with Malcolm’s prudence and modesty and promoted him to the rank of Colonel. He was also given a suit of armor.

Malcolm was eventually promoted to Captain. This is how it happened. The town of Oppenheim in Scotland was captured by pirates. The King told Malcolm of this tragedy and promoted him to Captain so that he could go and free Oppenheim. Malcolm succeeded in this task and the pirates surrendered! After this victory, during Christmas, Malcolm was introduced to the Count and Countess of Mansfield and their daughter, Thelka. They all became great friends.

Sometime later, Malcolm was sent to investigate a peasant town and wound up getting captured. The men he brought with them also got captured while looking for him. Malcolm escaped the place he was in and rescued his men. Together, the got away from the peasants. They found a church tower to hide in, but the peasants found them and tried to draw them out. Malcolm and the men held off the peasants until Captain Burgh came to save them.

The war between the Scots and the Swedes and Germany continued. Sadly, in one of these battles, King Gustavus died from two musket shots. Malcolm mourned greatly for the loss of his king, but at least they won the battle. Even though Malcolm is greatly saddened by the death of his king, he still went out and fought. In one of these battles, Malcolm himself was wounded. Thankfully he recovered a few days later.

It was December when Malcolm got a letter from the Countess. It said that she, her husband, and her daughter had been captured along with their town and the Castel of Mansfeld. She asked for help from Malcolm, he decided to help free her, her family, and her people. He disguised himself as a peasant boy, entered the city walls, and was allowed to go into the Count’s apartment. The Count and Countess needed Malcolm’s help. The German Emperor was going to force the Count’s daughter, Thelka, into Becoming a Catholic nun Nobody wanted this to happen, so Malcolm offered to help Thelka escape. The Count and Countess trusted Malcolm because he was a Scottish gentleman and a Protestant soldier. Malcolm found a place for Thelka to stay at while Malcolm followed the instructions he received from Colonel Munro

Later there was a Coronation for the new king, Ferdinand, and in the middle of the Coronation, three traitors started attacking the people who were there. They killed four officers and Wallenstine. They even captured Malcolm! He was taken prisoner and put in a dungeon in a castle in Germany. An old man who was a prisoner in the dungeon, helped Malcolm escape the German castle.

When Malcolm returned, the officers were planning for another war. The war came extremely soon. The battle was called “The Battle of Nordlingen”. This battle was a large one. The Scotts and Swedes beat the Germans in a glorious victory! The Scotts and Swedens even freed the entire city from the Germans. When Malcolm came home he married Thelka, and once again, the country was at peace.

First Semester Report

Robinson Crusoe was my favorite book I read this year so far. It was written by Daniel Defoe, who was born in England around 1660. He died in 1731. Robinson Crusoe is about a man who gets shipwrecked on an island and has to survive and try to get home.

Robinson Crusoe is a Historical Fiction type of genre book. That means that some of it is true, but the rest is fiction. Robinson Crusoe is my favorite school book I have read. You should read it sometime.

Sherlock Holmes was written by Arthur Conan Doyal. It is my second favorite school book I have read this year. It is about a detective named Sherlock Holmes who solves mysteries in London.

Sherlock Holmes is a Horror type of genre book. Horror includes crime, mystery, theives, and more! I like Horror.

Robin Hood is the last of my favorite school books I have read. It was written by Howard Pyle. It is when an outlaw named Robin Hood steals from the rich but gives to the poor when the evil Prince John of England and the Sherrif of Nottingham are trying to get him.

The book is also a Science Fiction type of book. These three books are my favorite school books I have read this year.

A novel is typically a long sequential story that often describes characters and events. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson is an example of a novel.

Short Stories are a very short part of prose fiction. The Sherlock Holmes stories are examples of Short Stories.

Novellas are texts of narrative, written, and fictional prose. Novellas are usually longer than short stories but shorter than novels. One example is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

Genres are "A kind of type of works of literature art or popular fiction" according to Webster's New Dictionary. Genres include Science Fiction, Horror, Allegory, Fantasy, Mythology, Fables, and more. All these genres are very important in writing. I have many Horror books.

The five points of a plot are exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The exposition is normally at the beginning of the book and introduces the main character(s). The rising action leads to the climax while building tension in the story. The climax is the highest point of action in a book or movie. The falling action solves the tension that was built earlier in the book or movie. The resolution is the end of the story.

According to Webster's New Dictionary, a theme is the main topic of a book. There are many themes in books and movies. Maybe even thousands in some!

An Interview with Sherlock Holmes

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with the world-famous detective, Sherlock Holmes and discuss his recent mystery he called, "The Musgrave Ritual", and this is what he said.

"Well, it wasn't easy. By far it was the toughest mystery I have ever encountered, but as always, I solved the mystery. It started out as me on vacation. My assistant, Dr. Watson, insisted that I take a vacation to get soe rest and fresh air, and take some time off my cases for a while."

Wow, I didn't know you took a vacation, but how, even on vacation, did a mystery come to you?"

"Like always, someone comes to me, explains to me the case, and asks me to solve it. In that case, it was Sir Musgrave. He said that his butler, Buton, disappeared after sneaking into Mr. Musgrave's library several times. He was looking over a family poem called The Musgrave Ritual."

"But why, why would he sneak into a library just to read a family poem?"

"Not read, to decode. Sir Musgrave told me that The Musgrave Ritual was a riddle and if you decoded it, it would lead you to treasure that had been lost over the years by the family and had been forgotten."

"But what about the butler? What happened to him?"

"Oh, he decoded the message and went to find the treasure, but I also decoded the message and went after him. I found him in the basement, suffocated and dead."

"What happened after that?"

"Well, as always, I explain how I solved the mystery to Watson, and boy, was he amazed!"

"Well, there you have it folks, the story of The Musgrave Ritual."

Genres

According to Webster's New Dictionary, a genre is "A king or type of works of literature, art, or popular fiction". The genres I learned about were Science Fiction, Horror, Allegory, Fantasy, Mythology, and Fables.

The first genres are Science Fiction and Horror. Science fiction drives into technology, sometimes space, of course, science, inventing new hears and gadgets, and sometimes time traveling. horror deals with crime, violence, mystery-solving, death threatening, and a lot of scary stuff.

The second genre is Allegory. An Allegory is a story that has a deeper meaning to it. Jesus' parables in the Bible were allegories.

The last genres are fantasy, Mythology, and Fables. Fantasy is made up and is sometimes fairy tale stories. Some fantasy stories have farries, dragons, kings, and queens. Mythology is more likely to be a Roman or Greek myth and is sometimes legend. Fables are short stories that teach a life long lesson.

Star Wars, Star Trek and Journey to the Center of the Earth are all examples of Science Fiction. Some examples of Horror are Sherlock Holmes and The Hardy Boys. An example of an Allegory is Pilgrim's Progress. Some Fantasy genre books are the Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. Some more examples of Mythology is The Illiad and The Oddessy. The last examples of Fables are Aesop's Fables and The Three Little Pigs.

The Two Tools I Would Want if I Were Stranded on a Deserted Island

First, I would want to have an ax to chop down trees and cut vines. I could use the logs to build myself a shelter and the vines could be used to hold the logs in place if they aren't stable. I could also use the ax for hunting and protecting myself. I could make traps for catching animals and to chop firewood to build fires with to cook and to keep me warm.

The other tool I would want is a hammock. It could help you sleep above the ground where the critters and snakes can't get you that are on the ground. I could also use it as a fishing net to catch fish with and a water filterer to filter out bugs and mud and large debris to make it safe for me to drink. I could even use if for a blanket if I'm cold and do not have a fire and to use it as a raincoat to protect me from rain. I could use it to turn into a sack to carry fruit in and it can be used to transport logs from one side of the island to the other by putting the logs on the hammock and using the rope to pull it. I could also make a log carrying backpack.

Robin Hood Goes Fishing

Robin Hood and his merry men did not have anything to eat that morning. After several minutes of hunger, Robin Hood said, "I will go fishing and catch some juicy trout for breakfast."

"But Robin, you'll die! You know the Sheriff's ships are patrolling the harbor," said Little John.

"I realize that," said Robin, "but look at all these hungry men. I can't just let them die of starvation. Besides, I'll have a fisherman disguise on. They won't recognize me."

"If you say so, but I' coming with you," said Little John.

"All right," said Robin. So they put on their disguises, grabbed their fishing poles, and left.

"Halt! Who are you?" asked one of the guards.

"We're just going to fish, cause we are so hungry and we have nothing to eat," said Robin. Eventually, the guard let them pass. Robin and Little John together caught seven trout for his band of sixteen merry men.

When he got back to his hideout, the cook cooked the trout in less than an hour for one trout. When he was done, the merry men were so hungry, there were no leftovers.

"But what will we have for tomorrow?" asked one of the merry men.

Robin said, "Little John and I will just fish for more trout but for more than today, so we will have leftovers for the next day."

And so they did just that the next day.

Novels, Short Stories, and Novellas

A novel is "a long prose narrative that describes fictional characters and events". A short story is "a piece of prose fiction shorter than a novel". A novella is "a text of written, fictional narrative prose normally longer than a short story but shorter than a novel".

Some similarities between these forms of writing are that novels and short stories are written in prose which is "written or spoken language in its ordinary form, without metrical structure". Another is that all three are fictional stories. One difference is that they are all different lengths.

I like novellas best because it's not too long like a novel, and it's not too short like a short story. One example of these forms of writing is "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. This book is a novel and so is "Robin Hood" by Howard Pyle. Some novellas are "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens and "The Time Machine" by H. G. Wells. Two examples of short stories are "Goldilocks and the Three Bears", a common nursery rhyme, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 56 short stories about Sherlock Homes.

A Knight of the White Cross - Part 2

In the book "A Knight of the White Cross", the main character is Gervaise. Gervaise is a page who is a young male servant who sometimes carried messages for a nobleman. He was assigned to serve on a gally. Even though he was to serve on a galley, he had a plan to keep them from being captured by 4 pirate vessels, and because of this plan, the galley was able to capture the 4 pirate vessels. A galley is a ship which has rowers instead of sails.

Gervaise eventually got back to the castle at Rhodes and was knighted because of his brave deed. He also decided to learn how to speak Turkish for 9 months. He was put in charge of a ship to take back the Pasha of Syria (which is in Syria because he knows how to speak Turkish. After he succeeds in taking over the Pasha of Syria, he goes to a party in which he sees a mysterious Greek talking to the slave, so he asks to be put on a galley as a slave to figure out a plot. He eventually figures out the plot and stops thousands of slaves from escaping from Rhodes since he could speak and understand Turkish.

As a reward, he is put in charge of a galley, and all the people working on the galley were younger than Gervaise! He captures two or three of the Corsair fleet. They also burned or captured the entire fleet. when he returned to Rhodes, the Countess' daughter, Claudia, gave Gervaise a gage at a party. When Gervaise was out at sea again, he gets captured by pirates and they stole the gage Claudia gave to him. He is sold to a kind master, but he escapes and gets his gage back. He returns in a small fishing boat, but almost gets captured by the Turks there waiting to attack the city. When some Turks tried to cross the moat, Gervaise sent fire ships and they destroyed most of the boats trying to cross the moat and the rest retreated. The Grand Master died, but the Knights of the White Cross win. After the battle, Gervaise asks if he can stop being a knight. After his request is granted, he marries Claudia.

A Knight of the White Cross - Part 1

I am half way through reading "A Knight of the White Cross", by G. A. Henty. It is about when Gervaise started out as a page, then became a knight of the Hospitaller of Saint John.

The knights are on the island of Rhodes in a castle. The castle has a prison to keep prisoners and make sure that they do not escape. Sometimes when they are not at Rhodes, they are at sea in galleys chasing pirates or fighting enemies or taking a trip to get someplace. Rhodes is in the Mediterranian Sea of the coast of Turkey.

Gervaise started out as a page, then he became a knight of a galley. After being chased by pirates, he was crashed on an island, but he found a way to escape and get back home. Back at the castle at Rhodes, he was knighted because of his courageous act. After this, for nine months, he studies Turkish and because he could now speak Turkish, he kept thousands of prisoners from escaping because of discovering a plot! You'd expect someone to become a better fighter to become a better knight, but just by learning Turkish, Gervaise became a better knight. See you next time!

White Fang

I just finished reading "White Fang" by Jack London. I really liked it. It was a very exciting book.

It was set in the Yukon territory. White Fang's mother was part of a dog sled team. White Fang's den and a Native American village are some other settings. None of my other school books I have read this year have any of these settings.

The book "White Fang" was written from White Fang's perspective. Whenever something happened in the story that White Fang did not understand, the Author would explain it. In other books, perspective comes from a human.

There are lots of Themes in White Fang. Some of them are exposure to nature, hardship, curiosity, instinct, and happiness in rest. Some of these themes are in the other books I have been reading. For example, hardship is in Wulf the Saxon, happiness in rest is in all of them, and instinct is in no other book I have read.

The book talks about White Fang's whole life from a pup to when he is an adult. Wulf the Saxon is the closest book to that. White Fang also has to learn from trial and error. The people in the other books learn from teachings instead.

Thomas Aquinas

Thomas was born in 1225 A.D. in Italy to a count and countess. At age five, he began school. When Thomas was old enough, he was sent to Naples to attend a university there by his parents. Thomas was influenced greatly by Aristotle's writings and the Dominicans, a new order of monks.

When Thomas was 19 years old, he became a member of the Dominicans; however, when he told his parents about this, they were very displeased, so they were kidnapped inside the castle they lived in for two years until Thomas' mother helped him "escape".

After that, he rejoined the Dominican Order of Monks. Thomas' greatest work is the Summa Theologica. Aristotle had the most influence on Thomas' life. He died reciting the commentary on the Song of Solomon. He greatly influenced the thinking of the church. He also worked to increase the logical reasoning in the church.

Success and Failure

A project I had to do recently was part of my science. My assignment was to build a radio. I had to watch daily videos on how to build my radio. My dad helped me to order the parts I needed. I had six weeks to complete my project.

I had to have copper coil, wire, scrap wood, paper, foil, tape, earphones, metal, a paper towel roll, and a toilet paper roll. I was excited to see it finished, and so was my dad. He knows a lot about electrical stuff, so he helped out a lot.

I had to take a few steps to make sure my project was successful. I had to make sure we got everything correct and in the right spot. I also had to test it out once in a while to make sure it worked correctly. If I got something wrong, we would have to change it and move on.

It was not really successful because I thought the wire was too short. I was very disappointed when I found out that I failed. I was looking forward to being finished with a real, working radio. We also made a radio transmitter, and that was successful. A radio transmitter can give messages instead of receiving them.

The crusaders sometimes did their best but did not succeed. I did the same thing with my radio. The Crusaders also sometimes did their best and succeeded. Again, the same thing happened with my radio transmitter. The Crusaders did not even try to succeed in their mission, which usually never happened to me.

Cathedrals

Cathedrals were often big and very beautiful churches. They were made of stone and were often at the center of a town. "Cathedra" is the Greek word for chair, so that means that Cathedrals were the chair of authority for a bishop.

Cathedrals often took centuries to build. Some people could work on one cathedral and still never see it completed. Romanesque, a type of style made in the 12th century, was the kind of cathedral that was the most common style in history.

These types of cathedrals have pointed arches, flying buttresses, and very high ceilings. All cathedrals are made in the shape of a cross and are pointed west to east. Flying buttresses are pillars that support the high ceilings. Gargoyles are stone beasts that are sometimes added to the flying buttresses.

It takes lots of money to build a cathedral, so the church sold indulgences. They said if you bought an indulgence, your sins would be forgiven.

The Themes of Treasure Island

I am going to talk about three themes in "Treasure Island", a book I just finished reading. Adventure is one of them. When a young boy named Jim finds an old treasure map, he begins a voyage across the ocean to find the treasure. The only problem is that pirates are looking for the map to find the treasure before Jim and his friends get it. It takes a whole lot of courage to find the treasure before the pirates find it, which brings me to my next theme: courage.

Courage is very important in a super long journey to find treasure, especially against pirates. Courage helps Jim to be brave while the pirates are trying to find him and the map. Courage also helps the ship's crew, the captain, and the doctor to be brave in times of trouble. When Jim finds out that the ship's cook and some of the crew are actually the pirates who are looking for the treasure map, it takes courage to stand up to them! The captain, the doctor, and Jim will need more courage than ever before to defeat the pirates.

The last theme of this paper is loyalty. Loyalty is also very important as well. Jim stayed loyal to Captain Smollett, even when there were more pirates than loyal crew. He also was loyal to a hermit named Ben Gunn who lived on the island. Long John Silver was not loyal to anyone, the captain or his pirates. You would probably need these three themes to write an exciting book.

The Culture of The Saxons

The culture of the Saxons was extensive, but I will include only a small portion of it because I do not know a lot about it. The Saxons always had a king to rule over them. The prince is always the successor of the king, which means the prince becomes king after the previous king dies.

the Thanes also have a high position in Saxon culture. The king gives them a large territory of land that they have to take care of. The Thanes worked for the earls who worked for the king. The knights worked for the Thanes. When there was a war going on, the Thanes would be the generals of the army.

Wars were a problem in Saxon culture. The enemy could attack at any time when the Saxons least expected it. The enemy could take over the farms first so the city or the army could not get fresh supplies to live so that either of them could be too weak to overcome the invasion of the enemy. Another strategy is to lock people up in barns or churches and then set them on fire. It is actually extremely sad.

I would not at all want to live there because of all the wars. There was barely enough time for peace. I read a Saxon book called "Wulf the Saxon". It is a happy and sad book, but I liked reading it.

A Cold Night at The Shire

One, cold Friday night, some boys and I were supposed to camp, but it was canceled so we got to spend some of the night at my Dad's Shire. We could not camp out there because there was not enough room for all the tents, so we had to just stay there for a while. We had a fire, hot chocolate, and lots of fun. We even have a swing and a zip line there!

Later, my friend Jaden and I wanted to get to the bottom of the zip line through the woods, but my brother Wyatt wanted to come along with us. Jaden and I did not want him to come with us, but we had to take him with us.

When we were about halfway there, it started snowing really, really hard; so hard, in fact, that we could not see very well. Wyatt brought along a flashlight, so he went in front to lead the way to light the way for us and regretted not wanting Wyatt to come along. We eventually got back to the others and the fire and warmed ourselves up a bit.

When it stopped snowing the result was that we got really cold and snow was all over the place. Fortunately, we had hot chocolate to warm ourselves up and we played for a while or just sat by the fire till it was time to go home.

The Battle of Stamford Bridge and The Battle of Hastings

A great king of England, King Edward, did not anoint a specific heir to his throne, so when he died, at least three people claimed to have the rights to rule England. The Earl of Wessex, Harold Godwinson, was chosen to be the new king. William of Normandy thought he was the rightful heir to the throne, so he immediately began creating an army to help him take the throne. At the same time, he was marching to invade England.

Meanwhile, in the Battle of Stamford Bridge, King Harold and his Saxons fought against King Harald's Norwegians. The Saxons won the battle, and King Harald and Tostig both died. This battle marks the end of the Viking Age.

William arrived on the southern beaches of England just three days after the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Harold had to drag his entire army across the vast country just to fight William and his Normans. Harold, at the top of a hill, held the high ground. William attacked from below while trying to climb up the hill to attack Harold. Harold kept the high ground and made the Normans retreat for some time, however, victory was not the Saxons. William and his Normans eventually chased the Saxons down the hill and crushed them. King Harold was killed by an arrow straight in the eye. His army retreated while being picked off by arrows. William was crowned King of England on Christmas day, 1066.

Viking Culture

Viking comes from the Norse words "seamen" and "expeditions", which are pretty good words to describe Vikings. The Vikings only used two kinds of ships, the longships and the knarrs. The longships are primarily used for transporting troops to battle. The knarrs are quite different. They are merchant ships that transport and trade goods. The longships are propelled by oar power or wind power. The knarrs are propelled primarily by wind power, but it could be propelled by oar power.

A runestone is an amazing king of stone because it is a stone that reminds people about a certain event. For example, a battle, a funeral, etc. It even had words written on it. The Vikings even made their own alphabet! Every letter is made out of just straight lines, which probably made it easier to carve in words on the runestones. The Vikings had three main gods. One of them is Thor, a Marvel superhero to this day. Three days of the week are named after the three Norse gods.

The Vikings used swords, spears, and axes (primarily axes) to fight with. Only the rich people could afford axes to fight with. The poor people only used swords and spears to fight with. They had a very chaotic style of fighting. Some common misconceptions about the Vikings are that they always acted like barbarians and they always wore helmets with horns, but only one helmet with horns has ever been found.

Charlemagne

Charlemagne started out with the name Carolus or Charles. He was the grandson of Charles Martel. At age 26, he became co-ruler in 768 A.D. Then he separated the kingdom with his brother Charloman. Charles became the sole ruler after Charloman died in 771. Charles got the name Charlemagne from winning a lot of battles which gave him the name "Charles the Great" which translates into English, "Charlemagne"! Charlemagne married a Lombard princess. He was crowned with an iron crown since he was king of both France and Italy. Like his father and grandfather, Charlemagne was a spectacular general. His sword Joyeuse and elite bodyguards were very well known throughout the entire country.

Charlemagne faced the Muslims in a battle. The Muslims did offer a treaty, but meanwhile, the entire rearguard of Charlemagne was attacked and entirely killed, including Charlemagne's nephew, Roland. The Song of Roland, a French epic poem, was written about this sad, surprise attack. Enraged by this surprise attack, Charlemagne eventually returns and conquers the Muslims.

Charlemagne even conquered Corsica and Sardinia. He also fought 18 battles in just 30 years against the Saxons. He forced the Saxons to convert to Christianity. He even made a court system and law code for the whole country to follow. When the Saxons tried to revolt against him, four thousand, five hundred Saxon prisoners were ordered to be killed. Charlemagne also conquered the Slavs and Anars. He had lots of other successes in his life and had a really great legacy.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

I have just finished reading "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". It was about when a kid named Hank got transported to the Middle Ages. When he was discovered by knights, he was imprisoned and was to be burned. The Eclipse was on the day he was to be burned, so he used the Eclipse to get out of it, and after that, he claimed to be a great magician. He also made many inventions. Of course, this was just a dream and eventually ended.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is Satire, which means it is generally meant to be funny. When Hank, "The Boss", and the king were about to be hanged, Sir Lancelot and five hundred knights came to rescue them on bicycles instead of horses!

Mark Twain used Visualisation in this book. Hank knew he was in the Middle Ages when he saw the castle. Mark Twain also described people very well. There were knights in shiny armor and chain mail and peasants in old, raggedy clothes.

I felt the mood of this book was amazing, weird, happy, sad, and scientific. Juxtaposition is putting two things together when they do not go together. Hank in modern clothes and a knight in shining armor is an example of juxtaposition.

In this book, Hank is forced to interact with a different Milieu, which is a person's social environment. The time period Hand came from did not have any kings, peasants, knights, etc; therefore, he was forced to interact with people from a different time, period, and social status. This story had many different tones. For example, when Sir Lancelot and the knights came to rescue the king and hank on bicycles, the tone was funny and weird. After they won a war with just an electric fence, I felt amazed and satisfied that they won the war.

An Illinois Kid in the Hills of Bethlehem

I don't know whether it was a dream or if I had really been transported back in time. Let me tell you my story. I was going to bed as usual and fell asleep. All of a sudden, I noticed that something was licking my face. After I opened my eyes, I saw stars and a sheep licking my face! I jumped up as fast as I could and looked around and found out that I was on a hillside surrounded by sheep! I was like, "What in the world?! Where am I?" I saw a town in the distance, but it did not look like a modern-day town.

I said, "Where are all the cars, and the streetlights, and why are the people there using candles instead of electricity, and those houses dod not look like our house."

Once I turned around, I noticed shepherds, but these shepherds had on tunics and robes and had shepherd canes. When we were trying to figure out who each other were, a bright light appeared in the night sky, and we were so afraid. But a loud, booming voice said, "Fear not, for behold, I bring tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For unto you this day in the city of David..."

I could not believe what I was hearing! This was the night Jesus was born! After the angels left, we went to see Jesus. After I saw Jesus, I began to feel sleepy. I laid down on a piece of hay and fell asleep. When I woke up, I was in my bed again. What a night!

The Five Points of Plot in a Hardy Boys Book

The five points of plot are exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. I read "The Hardy Boys", book number 2 over the summer. It was written by Franklin W. Dixson. I am going to explain the points of plot in that book.

The exposition is normally at the beginning of the book and introduces the main character or main characters. In the book, the main characters are the Hardy brothers, Frank and Joe, their friend, Chet, and someone named Spencer Given who hired them to go on his ship with him on a trip to make sure it will not be sabotaged.

The rising action leads to the climax while building tension in the story. At the beginning of the book, they were warned not to go on the ship and to turn down the deal Spencer had given them. Another time when they were on the ship, someone pushed Frank over the side of the boat toward the turning propeller, but he was saved. Another time when they were in a cabin on some cots, a bulldozer crashed through, but the boys dodged it just in time. They meet a lot of other dangers along the way.

The climax is the highest point of action in a book. The climax in "The Hardy Boys" is when the three boys get captured, but Chet escapes and calls the police.

The falling action solves the tension that was built up earlier in the book. That is when the police find and rescue the boys and arrest the bad guys.

The resolution is the end of a story. In the book, the resolution is when the boys find all the clues to what the bad guys were doing.

Justinian and Byzantium

Justinian was a very powerful and successful ruler in the Eastern Roman Empire. He began his life as a shepherd boy, but he walked to Constantinople at age 16 just to meet his uncle Justin. After the previous emperor died, Justin became emperor which meant Justinian would become the next emperor. He became emperor in 527 A.D. and ruled for 40 years. He became Justinian the Great for his successful accomplishments as emperor. In 537 A.D. a magnificent cathedral named the Hagia Sophia was built by Justinian. He also constructed at least 34 churches! He did this because after praying to God for victory over a battle and winning it, he converted himself to Christianity. He died in 565 A. D.

After Justinian's death, the military was too thinly spread and the treasury was running too low on funds so the empire began to decline. Heraclius was the emperor after Justinian. During Heraclius' reign, the empire was much smaller and weaker by the eighth century. By 800 A.D. it just consisted of Asia Minor and the Balkan Islands. With the loss of size, the empire an was an ordinary European country. It was a Greek state. Christianity was very important to the state. God was supposed to have chosen the emperors and with this claim, they have the ability to rule over the church and state. Even though it was the last of the Roman Empires, it was a strong empire.
